The Aadhaar card is an important photo id card issued by the Indian government that is necessary for almost every aspect of life these days. For this reason, it is important that LIC plans policyholders must get their Aadhaar card linked to their policies.

Is it Mandatory to link LIC Policy with Aadhaar?
Yes, it is mandatory to link LIC policies with Aadhaar and PAN card as per the IRDI circular that was issued in June 2017. This move has been made to keep fraudulent claims in check and increase help make the insurance claim process faster.
Regardless of whether the insurance plans are general insurance policy or life insurance policy, all policyholders must link their policy accounts with their 12 digit Aadhaar number. However, in the case of retail policies, it is not mandatory as long as they are compliant with KYC requirements.
In a push to make financial dealings more transparent, the RBI has made it mandatory for the Aadhaar card to be linked to bank accounts, voter id, PAN card, mobile card, LPG connection, LPG connection, and insurance policies. This is because when the one’s biometric details are locked then it becomes difficult for people to misrepresent or make fraudulent claims.
There are two ways in which the Aadhaar card can be linked to LIC policies: online and offline.
How to Link Aadhaar to LIC Plans Online?
In order to link Aadhaar with LIC policy, the policyholder will require the policy number and the Aadhaar card number. It must be noted that the mobile phone number must be updated on the Aadhaar card since an OTP will be sent to that number to complete this process.
The other details that are required to fill up the form include:
- Name as per Aadhaar card
- Date of birth
- Aadhaar number
- Gender
- Email id
- PAN
- Mobile number as per Aadhaar
- Policy number
The steps involved in linking Aadhaar to LIC policy include:
- Go to LIC website and click on ‘Link Aadhaar and PAN to Policy’
- Click Proceed
- Fill up the online application form with PAN, Aadhaar card, email and mobile number
- A prompt will appear showing successful linkage
- After UIDAI verification an email or SMS will be sent for confirmation
Note that this verification process might take a few days. Additionally, in case the mobile number is not up to date on the Aadhaar card and a policyholder is unable to link their Aadhaar with their LIC policy then one must contact the nearest LIC branch at the earliest.
How to Link Aadhaar to LIC Plan Offline?
If an LIC plan policyholder is unable to link their Aadhaar and PAN details online then they will require pan mandate form or Aadhaar card, self-attested copy of Aadhaar card and PAN card and Form 60, and policy number. The form can be procured from an LIC agent or it can be downloaded from the website.
After the form has been downloaded, the form must be filled up and submitted along with the proof. As a best practice, while self-attesting the photocopies it is best to mention the use of the documents so that it can help avoid misuse.
Is Aadhaar Mandatory for New Registrations?
Aadhaar is mandatory to gain online access or avail services of LIC plans for new registrations. New policyholders must link either their PAN card or Aadhaar card as well as provide additional details like date of birth.
Can Aadhaar be Linked Using SMS?
Numerous WhatsApp messages and SMS have been making the rounds claiming that one can link their Aadhaar card to their insurance policy using SMS services. To address this news, LIC issued an advisory stating that there is no truth to these claims and that services have not been made available to their patrons.
Also, the advisory cautioned policyholders from sharing personal information or account details with unknown individuals as it could be misused. Additionally, they advised policyholders to approach their LIC plan agent or the nearest LIC branch with their queries and concerns rather than rely on unknown individuals.
Tips to Remember While Linking Aadhaar with LIC Plans
A few tips that policyholders need to keep in mind while linking Aadhaar with LIC plans include:
- Keeping PAN and Aadhaar card details ready before filling up application
- OTP will be sent only to the number registered with UIDAI
- After the form is submitted a confirmation message will be sent to confirm linkage
- Always check the information thoroughly before submitting it
- For joint policy accounts Aadhaar number of the first policyholder must be mentioned
